Leprosy is still a cruel reality in many developing countries. And one of these countries struggles more than most.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a dark and difficult place:
- Almost three-quarters of the population live below the poverty line
- Life expectancy is only 55 years
- There were more than 5,000 new cases of leprosy in 2010, and more than 10% of those had severe disabilities
- As many as 5.4 million people were killed during the past 13 years of war and unrest
In many areas of this country, American Leprosy Missions is one of the only non-governmental organizations serving the suffering and reaching out to people affected by leprosy. We are often the only light of spiritual hope in this place full of darkness and despair.
