AMERICAN LEPROSY MISSIONS THERAPIST HONORED
The American Society of Hand Therapists will honor ALM’s Linda Lehman this month with the 2005 Paul W. Brand Award for Professional Excellence. The presentation will take place at ASHT’s annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas.
Lehman has worked for American Leprosy Missions in Brazil for more than twenty years, helping leprosy-affected people learn to manage disabilities and complications from this disease.
Since 2001, she has been American Leprosy Missions’ regional POD (prevention of disability) consultant for the Americas and Africa, traveling frequently to train hospital staffs and health ministries in techniques to minimize impairment from leprosy and also from Buruli ulcer.
Ms. Lehman contributes to various professional publications and this year completed a manual for healthworkers, technicians, therapists and others concerned with reducing disabilities from Buruli ulcer, a flesh-destroying disease that is becoming endemic in parts of West Africa.
Lehman will be attending meetings at the American Leprosy Missions office in Greenville during the week of September 26 and may be reached c/o amlep@leprosy.org.
