American Leprosy Missions Honored By Philippines Government

American Leprosy Missions of Greenville, SC, has received the Jose N. Rodriguez award from the Department of Health, Republic of the Philippines for outstanding work in that country’s leprosy elimination activities.

According to ALM president, Chris Doyle, the award is named for one of that country’s great leprologists and was created to honor “the champion among champions.”

Dr. Hugh Cross, ALM’s disability-prevention specialist for Asia accepted the award at the Philippines’ first National Leprosy Summit held in Manila February 17.

American Leprosy Missions has supported leprosy treatment and elimination campaigns in the Philippines since 1908. ALM recently affiliated with the Leonard Wood Memorial foundation whose Philippines research labs are contributing to scientific breakthroughs in the understanding of leprosy transmission and treatment.
