Mr. Millard Fuller, Founder and President of The Fuller Center for Housing, to Speak at the First Installment of the James D. Cockman Distinguished Lecture Series at American Leprosy Missions’ Headquarters
(Greenville, SC—April 14, 2008) On April 16, 2008 American Leprosy Missions (ALM) will host the James D. Cockman Distinguished Lecture Series. Mr. Millard Fuller, founder and former president of Habitat for Humanity and founder and current president of The Fuller Center for Housing, will present “Persevering in the Mission.” The event will be held in downtown Greenville at ALM’s headquarters, 120 Broadus Avenue, from 12:00 – 1:30pm.
Fuller and his wife served Habitat for Humanity for 29 years. During this time 200,000 homes were built for a million people in 100 different countries. In April of 2006, Mr. Fuller, his wife, with a group of associates created The Fuller Center for Housing, which raises money for housing projects around the world.
The series is named in honor of the late James “Jim” Cockman, who served for three years as the chairman of ALM’s Board of Directors. Under his leadership, ALM expanded its programs to include the treatment of Buruli ulcer and began research and development for a vaccine against leprosy. As a successful business leader, Cockman used his influence and resources to advocate for those whose voices could not be heard. He served numerous professional groups and public service organizations. He and his wife, Cathy, raised six children and cared for many foster children.
American Leprosy Missions is the oldest and largest organization in the United States dedicated to restoring healthy, productive lives to people affected by leprosy, Buruli ulcer and related conditions. ALM fights to bring hope to stigmatized people by using systemic, holistic programs to combat and, whenever possible, reverse the physical, spiritual, socio-economic, and emotional burdens that strike those affected by these horrific diseases.
