Project: Brazil National Program
Partner: LEPRA
The Brazil National Program allows interaction between the government’s Ministry of Health and ILEP members. The Brazilian government is committed to the WHO’s elimination campaign, and their focus has become early detection. Brazil still has a substantial ‘hidden’ caseload, largely due to inadequate access to diagnosis and treatment, poor awareness of early signs of leprosy and delay in seeking treatment. The program is still managed as a highly specialized program with limited stress on integration within the general health services. This is changing with the new initiatives to decentralize the leprosy elimination efforts to municipalities, improve community awareness through mass media and gaining high political commitment for the elimination efforts.
ALM supports the national control program with financial and technical assistance through Netherlands Leprosy Relief. The program includes the following principal components: supervision training, prevention of disabilities training, preventive and re-constructive surgery, as well as intensive support to special situation states.

ALM’s technical support includes POD Consultant Linda Lehman. Linda is technical director of the National POD Training Project in collaboration with the national control program.
