Project: Medhen Tutorial/Vocational Program
Medhen Social Centre (MSC) is located in the southwestern outskirts of Addis Ababa, in one of the poorest areas of the capital. MSC covers an area of about 3,000 square meters with an aggregate population of 129,000. The target groups are youths coming from leprosy-affected families.
ALM supports a tutorial program under the direction of Sister Senkenesh Gebre-Mariam at the Medhen Social Centre. The Centre started in 1989 to relieve conditions of extreme stress within the population by direct and practical support. Since 1974 a very poor quality educational system has been designed and implemented in the country due to the prevailing Communism at that time, which introduced the broad educational policy. Hence, the system affected the nation socially, economically, and politically, both in the short and long term. Because of that, the knowledge of the children of the masses has been limited to a rudimentary level.
The major purpose to the project is to help the youths build their capacity and thereby effect sustainable rehabilitation. It is hoped that the project develops self-confidence and competence of the youth, avoids their inferiority complex, helps to combat leprosy stigma, and maintains economic support for self and for families.
