Privacy Policy

This policy outlines how we collect and use different types of personal and behavioral information, and the reasons for doing so. You have the right to change or delete your personal information at any time. Please review this Privacy Policy to understand how your personal information will be used and protected. To make this Privacy Policy easy to find, we make it available on our homepage and from the bottom of every American Leprosy Missions web page.

Stewardship

We value your trust and assure you that we will always strive to be responsible in our management and cost-effective in our fundraising. American Leprosy Missions has been bringing hope and healing to people suffering from leprosy and related diseases for more than 100 years, and we are continually working to ensure every dollar is used to its fullest for this purpose.

We are committed to the highest standard of stewardship excellence. We will make every effort to honor any designation or preference you have stated. In the unlikely event a project should become overfunded, we follow our board of directors’ policies in applying gifts to similar projects involved in the cure and care of people with leprosy and related diseases.

Information collected

In your relationship with American Leprosy Missions, you can make donations, request materials or subscribe to emails. The types of personal information we may collect include name, contact and billing information, transaction and payment information. In order to tailor our subsequent communications to you and continuously improve our services, we may also ask you to provide us with information regarding your personal or professional interests, demographics, experiences as a supporter, and contact preferences. If you apply for a job, all related application information will be collected and stored.

Use and disclosure of information

American Leprosy Missions uses your information to understand your needs and provide you with better service. Specifically, we use your information to help you complete a transaction, communicate back to you, update you on the impact of your gifts, invite you to special events, and to personalize our services and communications with you. Credit card and/or checking account information is used only for payment processing and is not retained for other purposes.

Information protection

American Leprosy Missions securely manages all customer data in accordance with consumer data protection laws, including data handling, storage and security. In order to maximize funding for American Leprosy Missions-supported projects and services, we may share or exchange information on our mailing list with our partners, affiliates or other third parties. Information of this kind is used to enable American Leprosy Missions to identify others like yourself interested in partnering with us. This information disclosure is done very carefully to ensure that your personal information is protected. If you wish to have your information remain private, please call us at 800.543.3135.

In those situations where we retain third parties to perform processing tasks or other activities, and transfer personal data to those partners, we have in place contracts to ensure the information remains secure and limited in use. Some examples of when we share your information are:

  • When you make a payment on any of our sites your payment will be processed by a specialist payment processor to ensure a secure transaction. All payment processors used by American Leprosy Missions are compliant with required security standards.
  • When we send you emails, these are delivered by marketing platforms. As part of this service, certain information such as message opens, clicks and formatting are recorded to help deliver the best email experience.

Internet, cookies, website tracking

As with most other internet sites, our web servers utilize “cookies” to track a user’s activity within our site as well as record the IP address of each visitor to this site. A cookie is a small data file that is stored on your computer. A cookie contains a unique identifying feature that allows our computer to recognize you when you return to our website. The recorded IP address tells us which domain you visited from (for instance, google.com), but not your email address or other private and personal information. We use the information we record to administer this website more effectively, and to gather broad demographic information about what countries and domains our visitors come from and their behavior on our site.

American Leprosy Missions uses Google Analytics to collect information about the use of this site. Google Analytics collects information such as how often users visit this site, what pages they visit when they do so, and what other sites they used prior to coming to this site. Google Analytics collects only the IP address assigned to you on the date you visit this site, rather than your name or other identifying information. We do not combine the information collected through the use of Google Analytics with personally identifiable information. Although Google Analytics plants a permanent cookie on your web browser to identify you as a unique user the next time you visit this site, the cookie cannot be used by anyone but Google. Google’s ability to use and share information collected by Google Analytics about your visits to this site is restricted by the Google Analytics Terms of Use and the Google Privacy Policy. You can prevent Google Analytics from recognizing you on return visits to this site by disabling cookies.

We sometimes also use third-party service providers to serve advertisements (banners, video or test ads) on our behalf across the internet. These third parties may collect non-personally identifiable information about your interaction with us. This Privacy Policy does not cover the collection methods or use of the information collected by these vendors, as they have their own privacy policies and may be members of the Network Advertising Initiative (“NAI”). To remove yourself from some or all NAI member advertising programs, please visit the NAI opt-out page and follow the relevant instructions. If you wish to opt out of this type of data collection, you can also disable cookies in your web browser. Please note that disabling cookies may diminish the experience of the websites you visit, including American Leprosy Missions.

In some cases, our site uses securely encrypted forms for visitors to provide information, request information and make donations. We collect your willingly submitted contact information (such as your email address) and financial information (such as a credit card type, number, and expiration date). Contact information from these response forms is used to process donations, as well as to provide receipts and other information about American Leprosy Missions to our supporters. The visitor’s contact information is also used to get in touch with the visitor when necessary in order to resolve customer service issues or questions. Users may readily opt out of receiving future communications; see the “opt out” and “modifying your information” sections below. Financial information that is collected is used to bill the user for donations pledged.

Those who choose to sign up for email updates on our site may choose to give us certain contact information (such as their email address). Unless you opt out, we may use this contact information to send you additional information about American Leprosy Missions and its programs. Your voluntarily provided contact information may also be used to contact you when necessary in order to resolve customer service issues or questions. You may readily opt out of receiving future communications; see the “opt out” and “modifying your information” sections below.

Our online surveys may ask visitors for contact information (such as their email address) as well as a variety of demographic and practical questions. We may use contact data from our surveys to send the user information about American Leprosy Missions. The user’s contact information may also be used to contact the visitor when necessary. Users may opt out of receiving future mailings; see the “opt out” and “modifying your information” sections below.

Social media

American Leprosy Missions publishes content on social media platforms e.g. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, through both “organic” and “paid” methods to reach current and potential supporters:

  • “Organic” methods describe where content is published onto a social platform so that they may appear in your social platform’s content, without being promoted or forced to appear more prominently.
  • “Paid” methods describe where content is published onto a social platform so that they will appear more prominently, or be shown to users that do not currently follow American Leprosy Missions’ social pages.

We may place one or more social media platform “tags” on our website in order to better understand how American Leprosy Missions can provide you with the most relevant content available.

We do not have direct access to your personal data on your social media platforms.

Opt out

We typically give users the opportunity to opt out of receiving communications from us at the point where we request contact information about the visitor. For example, email communications from us will always contain unsubscribe instructions at the bottom of the message. There are, however, a few places where users do not have the opportunity to opt out of receiving communications. Should you wish to change your mail or email preferences, please email us at [email protected] or call 800.543.3135.

When contacting us to change your status, be sure to include any information that would help us identify you on our lists, such as complete contact information (name, postal address, telephone number, and email address).

If you request for us to no longer contact you, we will retain the minimum amount of information about you so that we can ensure we remove you from any future communications. Please note that if you ask us to completely remove all information about you, and you subsequently use our services at a later date, we will no longer be able to recognize your previous request to not be contacted, which is why we would keep it and suppress it in line with industry standards.

Modifying your information

Users have the following options for removing their information from our database to not receive future communications; or for changing or modifying information previously provided.

  • Email us a message with your request: [email protected].
  • Send postal mail to the following address:

If you chose to use our referral features, we will ask you for your referral’s email address, or in some cases mailing address, to send them either an electronic or paper communication inviting them to participate in our ministry. We will store this information for the sole purpose of sending this email or paper communication and tracking the success of these efforts to expand the reach of our work. If you choose to participate in our referral programs, you represent and warrant that you have a personal relationship with your referral and that you are authorized to share their information with American Leprosy Missions for the purpose of sending this invitation to them.
